Golden rules for new VPS operators
From VPS Wiki
If you have never worked with a VPS before, the following pointers will make your VPS experience a lot more pleasant:
Contents |
[edit] Backup often.
Contrary to shared hosting which can be considered reasonably fool-proof, working with a VPS can seriously affect the functionality of your system. Because of that, do not hesitate to back up your entire system often if you are not sure what you are doing.
[edit] Do not go wild with software updates.
More and more users update their desktop software as soon as updates are available. That approach can cause problems for your VPS. Please realize that immediate software updates can negatively affect your system stability. If you want to update software, make sure you know the reasons for doing so, and definitely back up your system beforehand.
[edit] Do not share your root password ever.
The root password is the key to your VPS. Do not share it.
